How to Turn Off Ledger Wallet (Disconnect from PC / Phone)

Ledger Nano X Turning Off

If you are new to the world of cryptocurrencies, there is a lot to learn. One important topic is self-storage and how to manage your crypto assets with an offline hardware wallet.

One common question with Ledger hardware wallets I sometimes see people asking is how do you turn them off properly? After all, you don’t want to risk damaging the device and/or risking the safety of your assets.

In this article, we’ll go over the details of how to properly turn off your Ledger device, depending on the specific model you are using. So without further ado, let’s dive in!

Turn Off Ledger Nano S / Nano S Plus

The Ledger Nano S and Nano S Plus are very similar in the sense that neither of the hardware wallets has an internal battery. Instead, they are powered by the USB cable when you connect them to your PC, phone, tablet, or other devices.

When you are finished managing your crypto, simply disconnect your Nano S (Plus) and it will automatically turn off. There’s no need to worry about safely ejecting the device like you would with a USB hard drive. Simply unplug and store your wallet in a safe location.

Turn Off Ledger Nano X

The Ledger Nano X is slightly different in that it has an internal battery and can work on battery power for a limited time (up to a couple of hours when fully charged).

To turn off the Ledger Nano X hardware wallet follow these steps:

  1. Disconnect from your PC / Phone
  2. Open the Control Center by holding down both buttons of the wallet
  3. Navigate to Power off using either the left or right button
  4. Press both buttons simultaneously to confirm

It’s worth mentioning that the control center for the Nano X will also open without entering the PIN (if you just powered on the device). Just hold down both buttons until you see different options for managing your device.

Note! If you’re having trouble charging your Nano X and it only works on USB power then go ahead and click on the link to read my previous article on troubleshooting the Nano X charging issues.

You can also enable automatic power off for your Nano X by following these steps:

  1. Hold both buttons to access the Control Center.
  2. Navigate to Settings and press both buttons to validate.
  3. Go to General and press both buttons to validate.
  4. Open the Battery Saver menu.
  5. Select the preferred power-off period.
  6. Press both buttons to activate the selected option.

With automatic power off enabled, your device will automatically turn off after the configured duration of inactivity. This is a convenient way to conserve battery life and make sure your wallet is always turned off when not in use.

In conclusion, turning off your Ledger Nano hardware wallet is really quite easy. For Ledger Nano S / Nano S Plus, all you have to do is unplug the USB cable and the device will be automatically turned off. If you have a Nano X, then press both buttons to enter the control panel and search for the option to turn the device off.
