Ledger Nano X Not Charging? (Try These Simple 7 Fixes)

Ledger Nano X not Charging

If your Ledger Nano X is not holding a charge and only works when it’s plugged in via the USB cable, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to fix the problem. For those that are in a hurry, here is a quick answer.

When your Ledger Nano X is not charging properly, update the firmware and let your device charge for up to 2 hours before trying again. Test different USB cables and power sources (wall adapter, computer USB ports) and make sure the cable is fully inserted on both ends.

Let’s explore these and other troubleshooting steps in more detail!

Let It Charge Longer

First, try charging your Ledger Nano X for at least 30 minutes before using it on battery power. I would recommend that you let it charge for even longer (e.g 2 hours).

The thing is that In some cases, it may take longer than usual for the device to fully charge, especially if the battery is completely drained and the device hasn’t been turned on for a long time.

Letting the Nano X charge for an extended period has proven to be an effective way to overcome an apparent “dead battery” issue. So give it a try and see if you have more luck!

Check the USB Cable

Next, make sure that you are using the correct type of USB cable for charging the Nano X. The cable that was included in the package is the best route to take initially.

Also, make sure the cable is properly inserted into your Ledger device. Don’t go full “Hulk mode” on it, but do notice that it takes a bit of force to get the cable properly connected.

If you are still unable to get your Nano X charging properly, then go ahead and look around your house to see if you have another suitable USB C cable that you could try out.

Try a Different Power Source

If you are using a wall adapter, try to find another adapter to test out. You could also try to charge your Nano X from a USB port on your computer, power bank, etc (and vice versa).

Trying different methods for charging can help you determine whether the problem lies with the power source or the charging cable.

Remove USB Hubs / Adapters

If you are using a USB hub or adapter, try removing it and connecting the Ledger Nano X directly to your computer or a wall adapter. In some cases, these devices can unexpectedly prevent the Ledger Nano X from charging correctly.

While I do understand that the USB adapter/hub in your setup is probably there for a reason, it’s essential that you try charging without it. If it works, then you can start thinking further about how to implement a permanent solution.

Clean the Nano X Charging Port

Over time, dirt and debris can build up in the charging port of your Nano X and prevent the device from charging properly.

To potentially overcome the issue, use a needle, or toothpick (or similar) to gently scrub off any excess dust and dirt and try again.

Note! This is not the time to use excessive force! Otherwise, you risk damaging the internal connectors of the charging port!

Update Your Nano X

If you have not done so recently, try updating the firmware on your Ledger Nano X. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your Ledger Nano X to your computer using the USB cable.
  2. Open the Ledger Live app on your computer
  3. Click on the “Manager” tab in the top menu and select “Firmware Update” from the list of options.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware on your Ledger Nano X.

If you are having any issues, make sure to check out the official Ledger support documentation. Once your Nano X is updated, go ahead and test if charging now works properly.

Fix Faulty Battery Connector

In rare cases, the battery charging connector on your Ledger Nano X may be faulty.

Internally, the ledger Nano X consists of two different electrical circuit boards – one of them has the display and the other holds the battery. The two boards are connected using metal pins, which sometimes are not tight enough to complete the electrical circuit properly.

The solution then sometimes is as simple as bending the metal pins upwards to make the physical connection higher. It may seem daunting, but don’t worry – the process is actually quite simple! Follow the Youtube video below for a step-by-step tutorial:

Contact Ledger Support

If none of the above steps work, it is possible that your Ledger Nano X has a hardware issue. In this case, you may need to contact Ledger support for further assistance. They can help diagnose the problem and may be able to provide a replacement device if necessary.

Common Ledger Nano X Charging Error Messages (& How to Fix)

Next, we are going to explore some of the more common charging-related error messages that your Ledger Nano X might display. For each one, I will give you specific steps to potentially solve the issue.

Battery charger issue – Unplug/plug USB cable

To fix the “Battery charger issue – Unplug/plug USB cable” error on a Ledger Nano X, first try unplugging and replugging the charging cable. Make sure to update your Ledger firmware and also try another USB cable. If the error persists, contact Ledger Support for further assistance.

Error: Battery cannot charge

To solve the “Error: Battery cannot charge” issue on a Ledger Nano X, try updating the device’s firmware and connecting it to a USB port for 15 minutes to attempt to resume charging. If the error message persists, pressing both buttons on the device to skip the message. If none of these solutions work, contact Ledger Support for further assistance.

Temperature too high for charging

To solve the “Temperature too high for charging” error on a Ledger Nano X, unplug the device and remove any excessive heat sources. Let the device cool down and try charging again. If the error persists, press both buttons on the device to skip the error message or contact Ledger Support.

Temperature too low for charging

To solve the “Temperature too low for charging” error on a Ledger Nano X, unplug the device and move it to a warmer environment (but avoid drastic changes in temperature). Allow the device to warm up gradually and try charging again.

If the error message persists, pressing both buttons on your Nano X will skip the error message. Contact Ledger support if you have tried all of the above and are still facing issues.

Critical temperature – Shutting down

To solve the “Critical temperature – Shutting down” error on a Ledger Nano X, unplug the device and move it to a room with an optimal temperature of between 0° and 40° C (32-104° F). Allow the device to warm up or cool down gradually before attempting to use it again. If the error message persists, contact Ledger Support for further assistance.
